LOW IMPACT COLOUR |
‘Low Impact’ is the label gyms give to exercise classes for those adverse to ‘jumping jacks’. But in the Salon it’s a way to create subtle, easy to maintain colour. Think of it as akin to gentle stretching, as opposed to that ‘combat cardio’ work out with the annoyingly pepped-up instructor who keeps yelling at you to ‘work it’. I will discuss here how ‘low impact’ can help four different clients and where each of them are at your gym. After all I haven’t been this controversial since mentioning my views on blue eye shadow !
YOGA STUDIO:
She looks powerful in that warrior pose, but get her anywhere near a salon and her inner coward emerges. For someone shy of colour and hairdressers I recommend semi-permanent colour. Since it doesn’t lift your natural colour, we can make locks darker or richer – or maintain the natural hue and just add shine. The result last six weeks and people won’t realise that you have been to the salon, just that you look great.
HIP HOP CLASS:
This teen wants highlights to match the stripes on her Adidas but mum won’t fund frequent salon visits. A technique called ‘The Zipper’ solves the problem. Take a quarter inch section on either side of the natural parting and clip out of the way . This is the ‘zipper’ section and will remain the natural colour. On the lower layers, highlights and/or lowlights are added. This method ensures that re-growth is invisible and mum can carry on saving for University.
FULL Body:
You can tell from her toned biceps and “you can rest when you’re dead T-shirt”, that she’s into extremes. This blonde has been hitting the bleach bottle at home and now she’s a blinding white. I would recommend giving her damaged and porous locks a chance to hold onto colour with two or three treatments of Redken’s ‘Extreme Deep Fuel’. This can be used at home or better still in the sauna or steam room after a workout. I would section about a quarter of the hair in the upper layers, sectioning with a zigzag parting and clipping out of the way. The remaining hair I would suggest adding warmth and contrast (darkening to a Caramel chocolate colour). The result is very natural but retaining the addictive blonde section on the top and around the face !
PILATES REFORMERS:
Quads the size of puppies are not her style. She’s going for the lean form of a prima ballerina. She wants colour that is not too obvious and doesn’t require much upkeep. The prefect look gives added dimensions without a lot of obvious re-growth. This look, at Combers, we call defused highlights. This can be retouched every six months (I’m a fool to myself !) The key is to use 3 different colours from the same tonal family. If you were a mousy blonde we would colour your roots the same depth with a touch of warmth, on the mid-length of the same section – introduce a shade lighter and the ends a shade lighter – still all of a similar tone. This leaves some depth at the scalp so there is not a grow-out factor, plus it is lighter on the ends so it looks like the sun has coloured your hair.
Colouring like exercise does not have to be all or nothing.
WARNING:
At Combers we take our time to listen and manage our clients expectations. The term ‘subtle’ like with many words in the English language is relative. With our unique 20 day satisfaction money back guarantee the talented team at Combers have to second guess your every move and not only make sure you get what you are asking for but that it also suits you ! You can help yourself and your colourist by bringing in pictures. After all – you don’t want to end up like the ‘emperors new clothes’ where you don’t see anything at all and your colourist is insisting that the colour is there !
