Over 40 Years Of Hairdressing

Celebrating Over 4 Decades Of Fabulous Hairdressing In Taunton

As the largest independent salon in Taunton, it’s humbling to know that we have guests who visit us from as far afield as Bristol, Bath, Devon and Cornwall.

Established by our Director Simon Willetts in May 1982, Combers Inside-Out Hairdressing in Taunton has been looking after our guests’ hair and wellbeing for over 40 years. Through this, we have over 40 years of living, learning and breathing all things HAIR. We are hair experts, so we know you will leave us with a renewed sense of self love and confidence.

Our salon is a happy place to work which is why most of our team has been with us for many years. We all have the same ‘inside out’ way of thinking where we aim to understand the ‘why’ as well as the ‘what’ so we can make a difference to everyone we meet.

We love what we do so will put our heart, soul and passion into making you look and feel amazing with a haircut and colour you love and can manage at home.

As a business, we continue to evolve. Simon expanded the salon in 2018 with a £250,000 refurbishment, making Combers Hairdressing the largest premises in Taunton’s Independent Quarter.

“I started out with one stylist and a trainee,” explains Simon.  “Today, we have fifteen stylists, three customer service front of house, three admin staff and five young trainees in the Combers Academy. More than 60% of our staff have been with us for more than ten years and over 20% for more than twenty years.

A Hairstyle That Works For You All Year Round!

“People often ask how we have managed to stay at the top and my answer is everything we do is centred around our guests. We listen to them and make sure we create hairstyles that work for them 365 days a year.

“In addition, we have talented staff who benefit from courses in London and Miami and learning from top stylists around the country who come to Combers. Over the years, we have trained over two hundred stylists who are now working across the UK.”

Combers are also used to celebrities popping into the salon. The salon was opened by TV presenter Judith Chalmers and was Simon’s first client.  “I was really nervous because Judith was such a big name and there were loads of people crowded round taking photographs,” said Simon. “But she put me at ease and was delighted with my efforts. She said she hadn’t had a better hair cut in London.”

One of Simon’s happiest memories was when Somerset and England cricketer Ian Botham was making his sponsored walk from John O’Groats to Land’s End.

“Ian was booked in for a cut and colour and it was all shown live on Noel’s House Party on the BBC. It was chaotic but a lot of fun and Ian was a real gent.”

Looking to the future, Simon and his wife, Carolyn, have been joined by their son Cameron as a director at Combers. Cameron has already worked with runway models at New York’s Fashion Week, works in top London salons once a month on mentoring programmes and is leading the salon’s drive to be more sustainable.

Cameron said: “We have a long-standing relationship with Italian firm Davines who create beautiful hair products which are kind to the environment and are ethically sourced while offering natural goodness and quality to our clients.”
